Recycle
At S&J, we encourage people to do their part in caring for and preserving the world which God has given us. Recycling used items is a great way to reduce waste and pollutants and accomplish that goal. Here are some ideas for "going green" in your home and garden:

  1. Bring the empty plastic pots back to us! Rather than adding more plastic to your trash, bring the unbroken pots to our nursery after you finish transplanting the plants.
  2. Start a compost pile. This is an easy way to reuse your produce waste and paper trash. Not only does it reduce the amount of trash thrown out, but it also creates very rich soil over time for you to use in the garden and in potted plants.
  3. Recycle some 2 Liter bottles as watering tools. Plasic spikes can be bought that screw onto the top of the bottles and allow water to slowly drip out of the container when turned upside-down in the garden. This is a great recycling idea for when you are going out of town for a few days and can't water your plants at home.
  4. Re-use old lumber or wooden pallets to construct a raised bed or plant container.
  5. Cut the bottom off of a plastic water bottle and place it over a young plant shoot for protection. After removing the cap to allow for ventilation and evaporation, the plastic acts as an insulator to maintain the heat in early spring and also as a barrier against some insects and small animals that could potentially damage the seedling.
  6. Re-use an old plastic barrel to catch rain water for watering your garden. Make sure you use the water often to prevent stagnation!
